Dry Eye in Children is on the Rise

Have your children been complaining of sore eyes??? Could they be dry??? Are they too young for that??

As Dry Eye Disease and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction increases around the world, research into it’s prevalence, and the cause, in children is beginning. A 2021 paper reported on the findings of children reviewed between 2016 and 2017 and found digital device use was linked to symptomatic meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye symptoms in children as young as six.

How has the pandemic influenced this? Negatively unfortunately.

A study presented at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting has reported that symptoms of ocular surface disease in children were higher than previously seen and could be linked to increased screen time during the pandemic.
